AEO vs GEO · In-depth comparison

AEO vs GEO: are they the same thing?

Two acronyms, the same market moment, and an answer that changes depending on who you ask. We cover where each term comes from, where the evidence genuinely agrees, and where only the marketing does.

Citable summary

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) share most of their techniques: semantic content, structured data, and external trust signals. The real difference isn't in the technique, it's in the origin and in who uses each word. GEO was born in 2023 from an academic paper (Aggarwal et al., Princeton) focused on generative AI engines, peer-reviewed and published at KDD 2024. AEO is an older label, tied to featured snippets and voice search, that the marketing industry has recycled since 2024 as a broader commercial umbrella. No study available through 2026 shows a guaranteed formula for either one.

This paragraph summarizes the article in under 130 words on purpose: if AEO and GEO are about anything, it's exactly this, fragments a system can cite without needing to read the rest of the page.

How we got here

Where each term comes from

AEO and GEO weren't born on the same day or from the same source. Understanding the order helps explain why the industry uses them so differently.

2011-2014

Voice assistants and featured snippets

Siri, Google Now, and Alexa popularize spoken search. In 2014 Google launches featured snippets: the first time an answer appears directly on the results page, above the first link.

~2018

The term AEO starts circulating

Per industry roundups, the label Answer Engine Optimization starts getting used in SEO circles to describe working content toward featured snippets and voice. There's no academic paper behind this label at this point.

November 2023

The term GEO is born

Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan, and Deshpande, from Princeton, publish on arXiv 'GEO: Generative Engine Optimization', the first formal framework (with its own benchmark, GEO-bench) for measuring content visibility in AI-generated answers.

August 2024

GEO passes peer review

The same paper is presented and published in the proceedings of KDD 2024 (ACM SIGKDD, Barcelona), turning it into a peer-reviewed academic study, not just a preprint.

2024-2026

The industry adopts both terms

As ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews grow, agencies and marketing tools (HubSpot among them) start using AEO as a commercial umbrella that also encompasses GEO.

2026

First AEO-specific preprint

Watanabe and Nakayashiki publish the first field study to explicitly use the term Answer Engine Optimization in an academic paper, with real referral traffic data from ChatGPT.

Three readings, none official

Nobody arbitrates this definition

There's no authority that fixes what AEO means versus GEO. These are the three most cited ways of understanding the difference, and none of them cancels out the other two.

Synonyms with different emphasis

HubSpot's reading

HubSpot treats AEO and GEO as the same set of techniques, and has chosen to standardize on AEO for being, in its view, a broader term closer to traditional SEO vocabulary.

HubSpot, What Is AEO?

One is a subset of the other

The reading of several industry agencies

Other analyses draw a distinction: AEO would cover featured snippets, answer boxes, and voice results; GEO would focus on citation within an answer generated by a language model. In this reading, GEO would be the generative-engine-specific subset of AEO.

Only GEO has an academic framework

The reading of the scientific literature

Peer-reviewed literature has used almost exclusively the term GEO since 2023, with its own benchmark and several follow-up papers reusing the same name. AEO barely has one academic preprint, published in 2026, still without scientific consensus on its definition.

Claim by claim

What gets said versus what the evidence supports

Six common claims about AEO and GEO, checked against what the sources available to date actually say. A "mixed" verdict isn't a comfortable tie: it means it depends on which source you ask.

GEO and AEO are exactly the same thing.

It depends who you ask. HubSpot treats them as synonyms with different emphasis; other industry analyses distinguish between optimizing for snippets and voice (AEO) and optimizing for citations in AI-generated answers (GEO). No body arbitrates which reading is correct.

HubSpot; Progress Software

Mixed

The term GEO has more academic backing than the term AEO.

GEO has a foundational, peer-reviewed paper published in the proceedings of KDD 2024 (ACM), plus several follow-up papers reusing the same name (benchmarks, measurement frameworks). AEO, by contrast, only appears explicitly in one academic preprint published in 2026, still without confirmed peer review.

Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024; Watanabe and Nakayashiki, 2026

Confirmed

Appearing in a featured snippet or in AI Overviews is the same as being cited by ChatGPT.

An analysis of over 21,000 citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews/Gemini, and Perplexity found these platforms cite differently: some cite more sources but with less real influence on the final text (breadth), others cite fewer sources but with more weight in the answer (depth). Optimizing for one doesn't guarantee the same result on another.

Zhang, He, and Yao, 2026

False

An AEO or GEO strategy has a measurable, isolatable effect on traffic.

The only controlled field study published so far, with real data from one domain and a control group with no intervention, found an effect attributable to AEO interventions more modest than expected, and its own authors called it suggestive, not conclusive.

Watanabe and Nakayashiki, 2026

Insufficient evidence

Doing AEO or GEO means you can abandon traditional SEO.

Google confirms that to qualify as a supporting source in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and meet the same technical requirements as showing a snippet in traditional search. Several industry analyses agree that neither AEO nor GEO would exist without the foundation of technical SEO.

Google Search Central; Progress Software

False

Marking up content with JSON-LD guarantees an AI system will cite it.

Google explicitly states there are no additional technical requirements for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Structured data helps describe entities, but no official documentation presents it as a guaranteed path to citation.

In practice

Which term should you use?

If you have to pick one word for a meeting, a report, or a website, here's what determines which one fits better.

AEO

If you talk to clients or do marketing

It's the term more people recognize outside technical circles, and the one the most widely used marketing software has adopted. It works well as an umbrella covering featured snippets, voice, and AI-generated answers in a single conversation.

GEO

If you talk about measurement or research

It's the term with an academic framework, its own benchmark, and a line of papers using it consistently since 2023. If you're going to cite scientific literature or discuss measurement methodology, GEO is the word you'll find in the primary sources.

At ArribaIA we use both depending on context: we recommend reading them separately in our guide on what GEO is and our guide on what AEO is.

What we rely on

We always distinguish between a platform's official documentation, peer-reviewed academic studies, preprints not yet peer-reviewed, and industry analysis. A preprint is not the same as scientific consensus, and an article from a software company is not the same as official data from a platform.
